DAY 1: IQUITOS – BUENOS AIRES COMMUNITY

08:00 AM pick up from the airport or hotel we will drive for around 1 hour 45 minutes approximately until Nauta town once in Nauta, we will take a motorboat and navigate the Marañon river for around 3 hours river up enjoying the beautiful landscapes and the possibility of seeing river dolphins (gray and pink), herons, turtles and many other species along with spectacular flora. Arrival to the community of Santo Domingo, checkpoint to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Here we will register and show the tickets to the people in charge. The entrance to Pacaya Samiria is controlled and regulated by the SERNANP (National Service of Protected Natural Areas).

Another 30 minutes more by motorboat until the Buenos Aires Community.

We can enjoy the amazing flora and fauna view during our boat trip.

We can see birds, especially herons. Hike through the primary jungle in order to see wildlife and enjoy the nature Night walk looking for spiders, snakes, lizards, frogs or rodents, listening to the different sounds of nocturnal animals.

Overnight in a typical house in the Buenos Aires community.

Dinner and rest.

DAY 2: PACAYA SAMIRIA

We get up early to enjoy the sunrise in the tropical jungle and then We will start our expedition. We will be on the lookout for monkeys and sloths. Then we will take a canoe and explore the river banks, always looking around at the movements and sounds to be able to observe the fauna next to the river.

3 hours more on the Pucate River, getting deeper and deeper into the primary jungle. We will take you by boat to try the artisanal sport fishing of piranhas, as the locals do. The guide will give you a briefing about how to fish.. If you are skilled you can even fish Acarahuazu (Oscar fish), Fasaco (Common Trahira) among others.

We will see pink dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) and gray dolphins or tucuxis. This is your opportunity to jump into the Pucate river and swim inside the Pacaya Samiria.

Walk through the jungle in the virgin jungle where we can observe the flora and fauna of The Amazon. Walking tour to see the Lupuna, one of the largest trees in the Amazon jungle. Explore the Iricahua (cocha)lake.

To get there, we will hike around 2-3 hours in the jungle In Iricahua we will have the opportunity to see different monkey species such as the woolly monkey, howler monkey, titi monkey (monkey stump or monkey friar), among others.

Furthermore, this lake is inhabited by Paiche (Arapaima Gigas), the largest fish in the Amazon rainforest.

Other animals we can see here are turtles and alligators.

Night expedition to find and see black and white caimans (large lizards river).

Campsite. Camp in the primary jungle. We will sleep in tents.

Selva Pacaya Samiria – Día 3

We get up very early and start looking for primates in our canoe.

Morning botanical hike. You will know different medicinal plants of the Amazon jungle. We will learn to cut and drink from a vine called “Soga de Agua” (Water Rope) . Pack up our camping gear and get ready to head deeper into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

We will sail approx. 2 hours to our next destination. We will look for primates and other animals in their habitat. The further you go into the Amazon jungle, the more chance you will have of seeing wildlife. We will explore the small rivers by canoe.

At the end of the stream, we will get out of the canoe and We will walk around looking for wildlife such as the armadillo of nine-banded (Carachupa), the giant anteater (anteater beer), rodents like the Paca agouti (Majaz) and the Black agouti (Añuje), among others.

Night expedition looking for nocturnal animals, including alligators, frogs, snakes, among others.

Camp in the primary jungle.

We will sleep in tents.

Selva Pacaya Samiria Día 4

Boat trip for 2 hours approximately to get to our next camping area, further into the virgin jungle, in a local area called Quebrada del fraile (Fraile stream). The deeper we go into the jungle, the better chance we have of seeing more different animals, birds and fish.

Walk through the jungle to find and see monkeys (such as the howler monkey or the woolly monkey) and other animals. We will be attentive because this place is good for macaws (red and green macaw or ara chloroptera, blue and yellow or ara ararauna, and others).

In the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve we can find 2 of the 8 species of macaws found in Peru.

Excursion to look for and observe some giant river otters. Night excursion in canoe.

Night hiking in order to find the nine-banded armadillo (carachupa or Dasypus novemcinctus) and rodents such as agouti black (añuje or Dasyprocta fuliginosa) and agouti paca (majaz).

Camping in the virgin forest.

We will sleep in tents.

DAY 5: PACAYA SAMIRIA – IQUITOS

Early morning bird watching. This is the best time to see wild birds in their own habitat on the river banks inside the jungle. Jungle trek looking for primates, exploring the surrounding lakes (cochas) in search of wildlife.

We start our way back, stopping in the Buenos Aires community to stretch your legs and have the opportunity to contribute to the community buying handmade crafts.

Return by boat to the Nauta town.

Transfer from Nauta to Iquitos.

Arrival at our office, or if you prefer we can take you to your hotel in Iquitos or to the Airport.
